The King of Drinks – Golden Milk

Golden Milk is like royalty in my book. The benefits are numerous and it tastes delicious. It’s a perfect way to wind down after a long day. It includes anti-inflammatory ingredients such as turmeric and ginger. I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the more inflammation is showing up in my body. I don’t like to take anti-inflammatory medication; I’d rather reduce my inflammation naturally if it all possible. This is one way to start.

Turmeric can help prevent heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimers. It’s also great for joints and can help reduce symptoms of depression. Turmeric has many natural medicine benefits. It’s definitely a superfood. Read Heathline’s article on 10 Proven Health Benefits of Turmeric and Curcumin.

Also, any time you are adding turmeric to something, you should always add black pepper. Black pepper increases the absorption of the turmeric by up to 2000%! Wowza! Even when I buy turmeric as a supplement (for headaches, body aches, etc), I make sure it includes black pepper in the ingredients. Yes, it actually DOES work and I feel better taking something like this that isn’t going to mess with my stomach vs. ibuprofen.

If you can’t sleep, a warm cup of Golden Milk might just be the ticket.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • Pinch Black Pepper or Cayenne
  • 1/8-1/4 tsp Cardamom (I like to use more than I should so start with 1/8)
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Ginger
  • Pinch Nutmeg
  • Honey to your liking (around 1 tsp). You can also add maple syrup or vanilla as an option.
  • 1 cup milk of choice (I prefer Milkadamia or Almond)

Use as much fresh ingredients as possible to enhance the flavor and nutritional benefit. However, it’s very good with ground spice and of course, easier.

Directions:

Add milk to a small saucepan, along with the honey. I actually don’t even use the honey anymore, as I like it just how it is. But, if you like a little more sweetness, it’s fine to add. Heat on med-low until the milk starts to bubble. Remove from heat and add all the spices except for the nutmeg. Whisk together. You can strain through fine mesh if you don’t like the texture of the spice, but I just serve it as is. Pour into a mug and add a pinch of nutmeg on top. YUM!

You can make up a few batches ahead of time, so you don’t have to keep bringing out all these spices night after night. Add all the spices to a mason jar and when you are ready, just heat up your milk and honey and add about 1-2 tsp of the prepared mix.

Gift Idea: You can put together the spices in a mason jar and give it along with a coffee mug. Don’t forget to attach the recipe. A very cute and inexpensive gift.
