Finding your favorite dog food for allergies is not an easy task. My dog, Cisco is the sweetest dog you’ve ever met, but he is allergic to everything… even people! We started our journey about three years ago trying to stop the itch and make our dog happy again.
Meet Our Dog
Before we get into my favorite dog good for allergies, let me give you a little background on my dog. My husband and kids were at the Humane Society looking for a new dog. This is the place we like to go because so many animals are looking for their forever home.
When they got there, all the dogs were so excited, jumping all over. Cisco came in, did a jump, and then sat down and just looked at the kids. Not a jumper? First box, checked. Next up was the cat test. We have several cats, so a dog that doesn’t like cats wouldn’t cut it at our home. They brought in a cat who rubbed all over him. He just sat there and didn’t move a muscle. Second box was checked. Cisco is also a medium sized dog. Not too big, not too small. Final box checked.
and here come the allergies…
Cisco was easy to train and very well mannered. He’s been with us now for over a decade. Last year, he started to get a really bad red rash. He has always been a happy dog ready for any adventure. His favorite activities are running, paddle boarding, and hiking. The small rash soon blew up into total misery for him. He was red everywhere and very lethargic from the pain.
I brought him into the vet for a check up. His thyroid was low, so we decided to try thyroid medication and see if that helped. It didn’t help his rash (it was a long shot), but it did help his thyroid, which was good. We shaved and bathed him in allergy shampoo and that didn’t help. Back to the vet he went.
The vet sent away some of his blood to an animal allergy lab and his results came back staggering. He is literally allergic to almost EVERYTHING…cats, people, grass, trees, etc. But he is not allergic to chicken! They say that is pretty rare, but we got lucky. We first started off with allergy drops three times a day and tried this for about three months. It didn’t help at all. We finally went to shots as a last resort and this was the only thing that was working. He now gets an allergy shot about every three months. Finally, we are very careful about what we feed our furry friend. He is our buddy, our pal, and we want him around for as long as we can.

Just like people, it takes some dogs a transition period to get used to new flavors. When you first tried vegetables, did you love them? If you did, you were the lucky one. It took me 25 years.
Transitioning…
When we first started transitioning our dog to this food, of course, he chose the other food, which was meaty and full of other “stuff.” We kept feeding him less and less of the bad stuff and more and more of the good stuff. Now he loves it! We’ve gone through more than a dozen bags and find that he doesn’t react to any of the ingredients. I thought about making him homemade food every day, but we are on the go a lot and I just don’t have the time to do that. I’m so glad this food worked for us. If you want more information on the transition, Chewy includes a great transition schedule under feeding instructions.

As a human who is has been allergic to darn near everything, I feel for Cisco. I had to have desensitization shots too, but they really help. I’m glad you found some answers for your handsome boy.
