Dry Brushing – Is it worth it?

If you are into self care like we are, one of the easiest (and cheapest) things you can do for yourself is dry brushing. It can help move toxins throughout the body and includes several other health benefits.

I learned about dry brushing during a massage years ago. The first time I had it done, I didn’t know what was happening and I thought it kinda hurt. I was almost a little annoyed because I was trying to have a relaxing massage. Little did I know it would turn out to be a continued practice of mine nearly 20 years later. I guess that’s why we need to keep an open mind.

I especially take the time to dry brush when I am feeling ‘off.’ The best time to dry brush is right before you shower.

Benefits of Dry Brushing:

  • Lymphatic support. If you watched the video above, you know the lymph system is a large part of the immune system. The nodes sit close to the skin, so dry brushing is perfect to keep everything flowing and a great way to rebalance.
  • Exfoliation: Dry brushing is a great to brush off the dead skin after a long summer or winter. I’m surprised at how dry my skin actually is. Can you say Sahara?
  • Energy boost: Dry brushing helps with circulation in the body and stimulates the nervous system, therefore you feel more energized after you dry brush. Morning time is the perfect time to get everything moving. Do not dry brush before bed.
  • Cellulite: Since dry brushing helps with circulation, it is also known to help with cellulite. Like everything “natural,” this can’t be confirmed (why I don’t know) but why wouldn’t it work? It helps increase circulation and blood flow, so even if it reduces the appearance for a little while, some is better than none.
  • Makes you feel great: This is the most important one. After dry brushing, I always have more energy and feel invigorated. I feel like I have less stress, which I’m sure is the combination of the shower and dry brushing. Either way, I’m going to continue my dry brushing for years to come.

You might be asking by now what is the proper way to dry brush? Start at your feet and start working your way up. Always brush toward your heart. Brush each section about five times. When you dry brush your stomach, work in a clockwise direction. This will really get things moving. Use it on your feet, legs, stomach arms, and back. You might need a dry brush with a long handle for your back. I personally do not dry brush my face. Ouch. There will be other areas that will be more sensitive to dry brushing, so just lighten up the pressure when you feel those areas. You should try to dry brush at least a couple times a week. Finally, make sure you use a natural bristled brush that is stiff. You will need to see what your skin can handle. Make sure you moisturize afterward.

Don’t brush off dry brushing. It is a great way to reduce inflammation and it makes you feel refreshed. A simple way to help reset your body. You can find our dry brush recommendation below.
