Choosing the Perfect Bag and Tote for Travel

When choosing the perfect bag for travel, three of the most important things to consider are size, durability and maneuverability. Especially if you plan to carry on. Over the years I’ve become a light traveler because every time I take a trip, I realize I only use about 30% of what I’ve packed. I’ve also made it a point not to check my luggage in. As it’s been LOST more times than I want to count. In addition to that the bags and totes I use must be both practical and affordable.

The Overnighter

This canvas Lush Leaves overnighter bag is perfect for air travel as it fits great under the seat in front of you. It checked all the must have features off the list. Three pockets up front for easy access to your items during travel. Which can easily house an iPad, a magazine, sunglasses and a wallet.  Three pockets inside of the bag for things like your phone, passport and other travel gadgets A place to easily access those items while your traveling is very important. It’s big enough for a couple outfits and a pair of shoes. Plus It doesn’t feel bulky and awkward. Having the shoulder strap is another great feature. It also nicely slides over the handle of your rolling bag.

Hardshell Spinnable Carry-On

At one time I checked my bags in for every trip. Not anymore! Missing luggage, late luggage and additional baggage fees are my top reasons why this is no longer an option for me. I searched for a long time for the perfect roll-on bag with a decent price point.

This  Rockland Melbourne Hard side explandable 20 in. spinner fits the criteria.  It really provides everything you  need in a rolling bag. The hard shell cover adds a layer of protection for the more delicate items you might have packed such as a camera and equipment. The size is great and the fact that it’s expandable is a bonus. I’ve found many rolling bags can be quite heavy even before they are packed. It’s important to find a lightweight bag for that reason. Let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to lift those bags in the overhead storage bin.

Duffle Bag

If we are talking “Road Trip” this duffle bag will do the job. However, it’s not the top choice for traveling on an airline.  Don’t get me wrong. I still love this bag but it’s not nearly as airline travel friendly. First problem is the lack of outside pockets, which is so important when you’re traveling. The second thing it lacks is the slit that goes through the top so that you can attach to the handle of your rolling suitcase. If you’re looking for a weekend road trip bag this one will definitely do since you will probably throw it in the trunk until you reach your destination! As for being weighed down in an airport, even with that shoulder strap was not ideal.

Totes

Now that you’ve disguised your weekender bag as your purse for a carry-on item, you’ll need to pack a tote to use once you reach your destination.

The round rattan tote is such a fashion staple right now and this one is very flexible and can easily fit in a rolling bag. There is just something about a straw tote that screams cocktails and sunshine! Let’s get this vacay started!

Or maybe a basic faux leather tote is a better fit for the type of travel you’re doing. It’s soft leather and again it easily collapses to fit inside your carry-on.

Wine Tote

Wine tote! Why not since we’re on the topic of totes! Not only is this Monstera pattern so cute, how fabulous would it be to give as a gift to your bestie (who you’re traveling to visit) with her favorite champagne or wine!

When planning a trip, taking the right bag is a very important thing! I love to take to trips a backpack – no, not that sporty backpack, but really elegant and modern. I like it when my hands are free; I can explore more and be more spontaneous! 🙂 Anyway, great bags! 🙂

  11. Sherry, what a great collection of travel bags! I have to get better about packing because I only use about 10% of what I take with me. LOL. I generally travel by car but my go-tos are a small suitcase with wheels and a large overnight bag. This was a fun post!
