4 Ways to Get Resolution Ready with Us

It’s time to STOP and get resolution ready by writing your New Year’s resolutions down on paper and get motivated to make change. I don’t necessarily make resolutions, but I do make reminders. My day to day goals don’t change a lot from year to year, but I do fall off the wagon from time to time, so I need to write them down again to really take them in and refocus.

A few of mine consist of the following. I’m sure they are pretty common, which is a good thing because not only are you making yourself better, you are making the world a better place in general.

Resolution +Reminder + Refocus

1. Health

Eat less salt and sugar. I don’t have too much trouble in this area. My biggest downfall is chips. It’s not good for my skin either! I always know by my skin if I’ve eaten too many chips. Drink your celery juice instead.

Drink less alcohol. Why does this one always make the list? I start off strong and then by the holiday’s, I need a reminder to cut that crap out. It’s nothing more than a poor habit. Time to get resolution ready by making some new, healthy habits.

Exercise. Yes, this one is on everyone’s list and if it’s not, it should be. Again, I don’t really have a problem keeping up with this, but sometimes I can get a little lazy and just feel like getting my steps in and not my sweat on. Try to get at least 10,000 steps a day and 30 minutes of weights/cardio at least three days a week. You will sleep better and feel better in general.

Mental health. Don’t forget this one! Whether it’s daily journaling, counseling (I think everyone should have a counselor), or sometimes just talking a walk in nature is all you need.

2. Happiness

More thankfulness. Each night Sherry and I both send each other one thing we are thankful for. It can be profound or basic. It can be whatever is on our mind. Sometimes it can be something as simple as being thankful for clean water. It keeps us accountable and reminds us there are so many things to be thankful for – more than we think. Don’t let your cup be half empty. If you add one thing to your list for 2020, get resolution ready with this one.

More kindness. Be kind! Don’t say things you are going to regret. You can’t take back words. I have things that enter my mind that were said to me years ago. Why do they have to keep creeping back? That crap is sticky. I have to feel the emotion tied to it and then choose to let it go. This goes for me too. Sometimes I say things I regret. You can’t take it back, but you can ask for forgiveness or simply say I’m sorry. Get used to saying those words in 2020 too. It kills the wound more than you realize. Let’s try it now…”I’m sorry!” See, not so bad.

Less bitterness. This ties into more kindness. Don’t be bitter. Kill joy!

More prayer. I am going to start a place in my journal for prayers. We talked about having a whiteboard in our office so everyone in my family can pray for people that need it. I always say I’m going to pray for this or that, but then by the time I go to pray, I forget sometimes! At this old age, I have to write it down. Also, don’t forget to do your daily devotions. Even if it’s just one sentence. Read it and sit on it awhile before you get up to start your day.

3. Relationships

More authentic relationships. In general, I always need to remind myself to work on relationships. They all need work. Spouse, kids, friends, co-workers, etc. Take time to send a nice note, say thank you, give a hug, say I’m proud of you…there are so many ways you can nourish your relationships. One area I’m working on for 2020 is to not take things too seriously. Am I overthinking it? Probably. Also, don’t let your feelings define you. Feelings pass.

Less social media. I’m a blogger, so this isn’t easy. Our job literally revolves around being on social media. However, I find myself getting distracted by things that I don’t need to be involved with, so I need to try and stay focused. It’s such a time waster. If you don’t think you’re spending much time on your phone, track it. I think you’ll be surprised. I know I was. If you have an iPhone, click on settings|screen time. Don’t have time to workout? Well, yes you do 🙂

4. Other Resolution Ready Reminders + Goals

I plan on setting a timer for 15 minutes a day to clean my house. This will help me stay ahead of the game. You always feel better when your home is orderly. The heart is in the home.

I have several specific goals I won’t bore you with. Each of our goal’s will be different from each other.

Getting resolution ready falls on one person. YOU! Start your journal and write down your “reminders” and also your “goals.” Remember, goals are different from your reminders. They are more specific and measurable. What do you want to do in your job? What do you want to accomplish this year? Maybe it’s a 10k, maybe it’s to travel to Europe. Perhaps you need to pay down debt. It can be anything. Just write it down and look at it often. I can’t stress this enough. This will make you happier and healthier and who doesn’t want that?

Today focus on what is, not what was. Don’t even stress yourself out on what will be. One of our biggest goals for 2020, should be to enjoy the journey. Be present. Be in the moment. Live for now. Not yesterday, not tomorrow, just today. JUST LIVE JOY!!
